Hardik Pandya’s life as the new Mumbai Indians captain might have got off to a terrible start but his former teammate Ambati Rayudu believes MI have all the chances of staging a comeback.
The 5-time IPL champions lost both of their first two matches of the 2024 season, first against Pandya’s previous team Gujarat Titans, and then against the Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad. On both occasions, Mumbai Indians reached very close but wasn’t able to secure the win.
Against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi stadium, Mumbai Indians had lost by just 6 runs while chasing a target of 169 last Sunday. And against Sunrisers Hyderabad 3 days later at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium, MI had conceded the highest-ever total made by a team in the league as the Orange army posted 278 as the target.
In response, Mumbai Indians did produce a great batting performance, scoring 246 but fell short by 31 runs. All of this, according to Ambati Rayudu, will shape the team up and make them even stronger.
Ambati Rayudu said this while commentating during the MI Vs SRH tie earlier this week on Wednesday along with co-commentators Varun Aaron and Jatin Sapru. Rayudu himself has won the IPL title thrice with Mumbai before winning another 3 with Chennai Super Kings and was hopeful that his former team would respond strongly.
Ambati Rayudu says it’s a good thing for Mumbai Indians to get hammered
When asked about MI’s chances of staging a comeback in the match against SRH and in the season after conceding 277, Ambati Rayudu said that it was a positive sign. In his response to the question from Jatin Sapru, Rayudu stated that if Mumbai stages a comeback in the match or early on in the season then it will display their character and also prove their mettle.

Ambati Rayudu further claimed that it’s good that Mumbai Indians underwent such a hammering against Hyderabad. Why? He explained that when a team goes through a period like this early on in the season, that particular team only gets better as the season proceeds.
“Jatin Bhai, if MI comes back from this situation then it will be a display of their character, and going forward in the season, they can get even more better because in the early stages, if a team goes through such a hammering, the team will only tend to get better.” – Rayudu said during commentary.
Rayudu reminds Varun Aaron how many titles MI have won
When Varun Aaron was asked about MI’s chances of a comeback, he wasn’t too sure of it, and that somehow triggered Ambati Rayudu. The 38-year-old former India batter took a dig at Aaron by reminding them that Mumbai have not 1, 2, or 3 but 5 IPL titles to their names and so they are, without a shadow of a doubt, going to come back. Rayudu’s reply could also be a taunt towards Aaron who has won only 1 IPL title with Gujarat Titans in 2022.
“Bhai Varun, MI are champions of 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 seasons, so they will never let the chance go. I think this period that MI is going through, is only going to make them a better side going forward and this situation will make them stronger.” –
