Macron: The rules of the game have changed and Europe may die
French President Emmanuel Macron urged Europe to confront the challenges of a changing world, warning that “Europe today is mortal and may die.”“This depends only on our choices,” Macron said in his speech on Thursday at the Sorbonne University in Paris, warning that Europe is “not armed against the risks we face” in a world in which “the rules of the game” have changed. He added: "Over the next decade there is a great risk that Europe will weaken or even fall."Macron called on Europe to develop a "credible" defense strategy that would make the continent less dependent on the United States.“We need to build a strategic concept for a credible European defense,” he said, adding that he would ask European partners to submit proposals in the coming months. The French President indicated that Europe also needs to build its own capabilities in the field of defense and cybersecurity, stressing the need to give preference to European suppliers in purchasing military equipment, supporting the idea of obtaining a European loan to finance these efforts.
