A huge controversy took place during the game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, leaving the latter's head coach Kumar Sangakkara absolutely furious. SRH and RR locked horns against each other in the 50th match of the ongoing IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
The reason behind the controversy was a shocking decision given by the third umpire. The incident took place in the 15th over when Avesh Khan was bowling to Travis Head. On the third ball of the over, Avesh bowled a full delivery outside off and Head chased the ball but could not make any contact. In his attempt to reach the ball, Head lost his balance and went out of the crease.
Head did not get back inside the crease immediately after losing his balance. In the meantime, wicketkeeper Sanju Samson collected the ball and hit the stumps with an underarm throw. Head reached for his crease with the ball but looked a bit late.
The decision was referred to the third umpire and the replays showed that the bat was in the air when the ball hit the stumps. However, the third umpire said that the bat was grounded and gave his decision in the favour of the batter. Sangakkara was not at all impressed with the ball and decided to express his displeasure to the official standing near the dugout.

Fortunately for RR, the decision did not cost them anything as Avesh Khan dismissed Head on the very following delivery. Head moved across to play a lap shot but ended up guiding the ball onto the stumps. The Australia opener departed after scoring 58 runs. His knock came off 44 balls and was studded with six fours and three sixes.
At the time of writing this report, SRH were on 187 for 3 in the 20th over with Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen batting in the middle.
